Padis Jewelry
Our showrooms display an incredible array of certified loose diamonds as well as jewelry from the world’s most desirable designers and watchmakers.
One of the most significant pieces of jewelry you will ever buy is an engagement ring. In addition to representing your love and enduring bond, you want it to be something she will be proud to wear for years to come. This is why you want to make a smart decision.
Along with considering the 4Cs of the diamond’s quality - cut, color, clarity, carat – there are other decisions to make such as the setting, the metal, the stones, and the price. In many designs, the center stone is the largest and the most expensive. Since the cut of the diamond is responsible for the stone’s sparkle, most experts say it is better to get a smaller diamond with a better cut than choosing a larger diamond with a lesser cut. The setting is used to showcase the center stone and a prong setting is commonly used in engagement rings. This type of setting makes the stone completely visible and allows the maximum amount of light to enter the diamond. You will also find a choice of metals including white, yellow, and rose gold or Platinum as well as two-tone options. It is recommended that before you even start shopping, set a budget and stick to it, and remember that the metal, setting and stone determine the price. Working with the jewelry consultants of Padis Jewelry, we want you to know our goal is to see you get the best engagement ring within your budget. Our inventory includes some of the top names in the industry and at least 10,000 loose diamonds. We invite you to set up a visit with one of our expert, non-commissioned jewelry consultants for a stress-free, knowledgeable engagement ring shopping experience. Since 1974, Padis Jewelry has been a trusted source for buying exquisite certified loose diamonds, engagement rings and fine jewelry. We are one of the only jewelers in the area that offers such an exclusive selection of top names in the industry as well as such a large inventory. If you are a lover of beautiful jewels, please schedule at visit to San Francisco’s finest jewelry showrooms.

When you buy something as important as an engagement ring, a ring that will be worn every day for years to come, you want to get the best ring within your budget. This is one reason it is helpful to buy from an established and credentialed jeweler.
The Internet should be able to tell you some facts about the jeweler you are considering such as how long they have been in business and do they have positive reviews from actual customers. An established jeweler typically has high marks for their jewelry as well as their service and will probably be around in years to come for regular ring maintenance. Respected jewelers are also more likely to have GIA Graduate Gemologists on staff and a bench jeweler, who can help repair or resize your jewelry. Their services may also include designing custom pieces if that is something you are interested in. Another important thing to consider when looking for a jeweler to buy an engagement ring from is how big is their selection? Also if you want a ring from a particular designer, does the store you are considering have rings from the designer or other similar designers. Finally we think the service you get when shopping for this important of a purchase is another consideration. If you want a stress-free experience, we recommend shopping with a jeweler who has a non-commissioned sales staff and is committed to taking your needs and budget seriously. As a family-owned business, Padis Jewelry gets an A+ on all of the above. In business for more than forty years, we work with every customer to ensure their experience meets or exceeds expectations. From the moment you walk into our warm and welcoming showrooms, you are treated like part of the Padis family. Padis Jewelry, a family-owned business, has been a trusted source for buying exquisite certified loose diamonds, engagement rings and fine jewelry since 1974. It is one reason we encourage diamond buyers to learn something about the worldwide standard for describing diamonds known as the 4Cs – carat weight, cut, color and clarity. Created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the mid-twentieth century, the universal method is used to assess the quality and the value of a diamond.
The GIA states that the “cut” of a diamond has the greatest influence on a diamond’s sparkle and is critical to the ultimate beauty and value. Additionally they add of the 4Cs, the cut is “the most complex and technically difficult to analyze.” Also the cut is not the same as the shape of a diamond such as a round brilliance or a princess cut. Rather it defines how well the diamond’s facets interact with light to allow the maximum amount of light to return through the top of the diamond. Before the diamond is cut, the depth, table size, crown height and angle, girdle thickness and other factors are taken into account. The “color” in the 4Cs refers to the amount of color in a diamond with the most perfect ones having no hue whatsoever. The D to Z color-grading system rates colorless diamonds with a D and diamonds exhibiting a measurable amount of light yellow in their hue with a Z. “Clarity” measures the amount of inclusions and blemishes in the diamond. An “F” rating means there are no inclusions or blemishes visible to a skilled grader and an “IF” means that no inclusions and only blemishes are visible to a skilled grader. The carat weight of a diamond is the actual measure of the diamond’s weight. Each metric carat is 200 milligrams and a carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points.’ This means a diamond weighing 0.25 carats is twenty-five points. At any time, Padis Jewelry has at least 10,000 exquisite diamonds in our inventory, and we have been selling diamonds and fine jewelry to the San Francisco area for over 40 years. The GIA reports that more than “$1.1 billion worth of extreme top-end diamonds, colored gems and jewelry were sold at auction by the world’s most renowned houses in 2017.” However while sales at Christie’s and Sotheby’s were strong, in the second half of the year a number of important high-end diamonds went unsold as buyers appeared to be selective.
The year’s trend showed strong interested in specialty diamonds such as the April sale of the Pink Star diamond at Sotheby’s Hong Kong location. The Pink Star set a world record for the highest priced gemstone to be sold yet at auction. The stone, a 59.60 carat Fancy Vivid pink Internally Flawless diamond, was the “largest diamond of those grades ever graded by GIA.” The winning bid was a whopping $7.2 million by Chow Tai Fook, a large Hong Kong based retail jewelry chain. The Pink Star was sold at auction for $83 million two years earlier but the buyer was unable to come up with the money. At the end of the year, an anonymous buyer bought a 5.69 carat GIA graded Fancy Vivid blue diamond at Sotheby’s. The emerald-cut blue diamond sold for $15.1 million and is graded by the GIA as Natural Color, VVS1 clarity and be potentially Internally Flawless. Another important diamond sold a couple of times over the last several years includes the 24.78 carat Graff Pink. In November 2010, it was sold at Sotheby’s for $46.2 million, which made it the most expensive pink diamond ever to sell at auction. The stone is described as an “intense pink round-cornered rectangular step-cut diamond, set between shield-shaped diamond shoulders, and in platinum.” In November of 2013, the Pink Graf set another record with a sale price of $83 million. While Padis Jewelry is not selling anything close to an $83 million diamond, nonetheless we have a stunning inventory of over 10,000 loose diamonds and gemstones at any one time. In fact, any time you walk into our friendly, welcoming showrooms, we have at least two GIA (Gemological Institute of America Inc.) Graduate Gemologists on staff at all times. The GIA Graduate Gemologist program is the most prestigious credential in the industry, and all participants receive comprehensive information regarding diamonds and colored stones. During the coursework, our staff was introduced to both technical and practical skills including the 4Cs, the International Diamond Grading System, and the Colored Stone Grading System. Padis’ Graduate Gemologists were trained on how to use the latest gemological equipment and procedures in order to identify and grade different types of gemstones. Their hands-on experience with how the GIA grading system and the 4Cs are used to accurately rate the value of diamonds allow them to help you make smart decisions and get the best value. According to the GIA, they are “world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones, and pearls.” The organization was established in 1931 and operates as a nonprofit institute recognized as a leading source of knowledge, standards, and education in gems and jewelry. The GIA established the “4Cs” (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight) as well as the International Diamond Grading System™ in the 1940s that are the standards we still used today. At Padis, we feel that by having such knowledgeable consultants as a part of our non-commissioned sales staff guarantees customers receive more reliable, educated information about the diamonds and gemstones they are buying. Source: gia.edu/gem-education/program-graduate-gemologist When you buy a certified diamond, you know just what you are getting. The certification process grades and documents the quality of the diamond by assessing the 4Cs of the stone: cut, clarity, carat and color as well as provides other details. It also offers the buyer the assurance that the diamond is of the correct value and has been inspected by an independent lab. Furthermore, if you are going to insure a costly high-grade diamond, many insurers require the stone to be certified.
Graduate gemologists use high-powered microscopes and other sensitive instruments to compile the written certification report. While not an appraisal, the report is a detailed blueprint of the stone’s quality characteristics and offers other information such as whether the stone has been treated or enhanced to improve its color or clarity. Also along with the technical measurements and evaluations of the 4Cs, the report generally includes a diagram of the stone’s inclusions as well as top and side views and a chart that details the weight, color grade, cuts, and angles. Among Padis Jewelry’s huge inventory of exquisite diamonds, any diamond we sell larger than 0.40 carats comes with a report from an accredited, independent laboratory such as the United States divisions of AGS, Forevermark, GIA or EGL USA. Gemologists estimate that a round cut diamond may cost as much as 30% more than a similar fancy shaped diamond for several reasons. For one thing, it takes much more raw material to cut round brilliant diamonds and to ensure the demanding proportions that maximize the potential brightness of the stone are met. It is also due to the much larger demand for round cut diamonds.
It is a common misconception that a diamond’s cut is the shape of the stone such as round or oval. Rather the cut of the diamond describes how well the stone’s facets interact with the light. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) says the proportions of a precision-cut standard round brilliant diamond affect the brightness of the diamond (the amount of internal and external white light reflected). It also affects the fire, which is the scattering of the white light into all the colors of the rainbow, and finally the scintillation or the amount of sparkle the diamond produces. They add that, “precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so its proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond.” The “ideal cut” allows the maximum amount of light to return through the top of the diamond and takes into account the depth, table size, crown height and angle, girdle thickness and more. Gemologists carefully evaluate a rough stone to determine the best cut that will offer the maximum clarity, color and carat weight. While all of this may sound complicated, it does help to have a rudimentary understanding of how the cut affects the stone’s sparkle and brilliance as well as to only shop with a highly-respected jeweler. Diamonds are an investment and it pays to make an educated decision. According to WeddingWire, an online marketplace for vendors and engaged couples, the number one trend this year will be a center stone in the shape of an oval. The oval has been steadily gaining popularity due to a unique and clean look that adds a vintage feel to any setting.
Exuding femininity, rose gold is also still a strong trend for the upcoming year. If you love the look, you will be pleased to find more and more jewelers are offering engagement and wedding rings in a rose gold option. A recent Bride Magazine articles quotes jeweler Selin Kent as saying the rose gold trend is here to stay, but adds that she recommends a slightly different take. She explains a fresh, new look is to have the center stone in platinum or white gold, and the rest of the ring in a colored metal. Selin says, “Diamonds can take on the color of the metal they’re set in, so mixing metals within the ring will show a diamond in its best light.” Additionally Bride Magazine notes that Jenny Klatt of Jemma Wynne suggests open ring styles are likely to be popular this coming engagement season. Her Jemma Wynne partner, Stephanie Wynne Lalin, says, “It’s an alternative, but still feels timeless. It gives brides a real opportunity for personalization and—bonus!!—she can have two stones.” Furthermore, the two stones provide the option of choosing two diamonds, a diamond and colored gemstone or other possibilities.
