If you are looking for a high quality diamond, you cannot go wrong purchasing a Forevermark diamond. The De Beers Group of Companies has a 125 year history of diamond expertise and sells some of the world’s most stunning diamonds. In addition every Forevermark diamond must not only meet the company’s standards for quality and beauty but be responsibly sourced. They proudly state that less than one percent of the world’s diamonds meet Forevermark’s standard of excellence, which goes far beyond the 4Cs.
Before it gets a Forevermark inscription, a diamond goes through a rigorous inspection. The company also uses an innovative technology to lightly inscribe (1/20th of a micron deep) the diamond’s unique identification number, which is only visible with 50 X magnification. The number is used to register the diamond under your name. Another reason to buy a Forevermark diamond is the assurance that it comes from a company as committed to providing the world with diamonds as it is to doing it with integrity. Going well beyond the international Kimberly Process Certification Scheme to identify conflict free diamonds, Forevermark mines comply with strict political, financial, social and environmental requirements. They state “As part of our CSR (corporate social responsibility), we ensure that all employees and communities from diamond producing areas benefit from legal, safe and responsible business practices.” Padis Jewelry is proud to sell Forevermark diamonds including the Forevermark Tribute™ Collection. As one of the estimated 29 million people who watched the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, we were curious about the diamond tiara worn by Meghan on the big day. Known as the Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau, the tiara was loaned to the bride from Queen Elizabeth.
The tiara originally belonged to Queen Mary, who was married to King George V and Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother. Queen Mary commissioned the platinum bandeau tiara in 1932 to be designed around the detachable center brooch. The brooch was a gift to Mary in 1893 from the Country of Lincoln upon her marriage to then-Prince George, Duke of York. The tiara was bequeathed to Queen Elizabeth upon Mary’s death in 1953. The stunning central brooch is done in a classic style and features a large brilliant diamond in the center, which is surrounded by nine brilliant diamonds. The flexible band is made up of “eleven sections, pierced with interlaced ovals and pavé set with large and small brilliant diamonds.” Originally the piece was known as the Filgree Tiara and was worn by Queen Mary for less formal events such as Gala performances in the later years of her life. Up until Meghan Markle beautifully donned the delicate tiara on her wedding day, it had not been seen in public for more than 60 years. Padis Jewelry has an extensive selection of exquisite loose diamonds, engagement rings and other fine jewelry, and while our collection does not include tiaras, we have plenty of pieces to satisfy our most discerning customers. During our many years in the jewelry industry, we have help thousands of customers navigate the process of buying the perfect engagement ring. Our jewelry consultants understand the purchase of an engagement ring signifies one of the most important events in your life and that it can be overwhelming. Also for many customers, it may be your first major jewelry purchase along with one that you really want to get right. It is a good idea to browse engagement rings on the web before you even set foot in a jewelry store. Padis has an excellent website with a large collection of engagement rings from some of the industry’s most sought-after jewelry brands. It is also recommended that you set a budget and let your jeweler know what it is as it will help to narrow down the best rings within that range. If you are a man shopping on your own, we recommend taking time to consider her preferences and lifestyle, and if you can, find out her ring size. Questions you will need to decide include what shape of stone do you think she would like and what color of metal would she prefer? Is she a yellow gold type of girl or more into white or rose gold? Furthermore be an educated diamond buyer and read up on the 4Cs - cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. A few weeks ago Sotheby’s set a new sales record for a 3.47-carat fancy intense blue diamond ring. The exquisite blue stone sold for $6,663,300 at auction, which totaled $1.92-million-per-carat making it the highest price ever paid for a stone of its grade. More surprising was the fact that the actually sale price was almost triple the $2 million to $2.5 million estimated by Sotheby before the auction.
This is due to blue diamonds now considered to be the rarest and most expensive of all diamonds. In fact the Tel Aviv-based Fancy Color Research Foundation says that the value of blue diamonds has been rising faster than the value of either pink or yellow diamonds. Another reason the rings garnered such a high price at auction is fancy colored stones are graded based on their color quality. The GIA explains the ring was graded “fancy intense,” which is the second highest color grade and just behind “fancy vivid.” The known history of the ring began shortly after WWII when a Pan AM pilot bought the ring to give it to a Pan AM stewardess who later became his wife. The pilot died shortly after the couple married but the wife held on to the ring for many decades. During this time there was not a market for fancy colored diamonds and they were not considered to be anywhere near as valuable as colorless diamonds. At one point, the ring was briefly dropped in a garbage disposal and has a small chip on it. Eventually the ring was passed on to a daughter in the 1990. It was appraised in 2006 for $150,000. Needless to say the family was thrilled with the auction results. Another fancy intense blue diamond went on auction around the same time. The 3.09 Ct ring sold for $5,375,000, which was $1.74 million per carat. Christie, who sold the diamond, had estimated the ring would sell somewhere in the range of $2 million to $3 million. While Padis Jewelry obviously does not have diamonds of this extremely rare quality, we do have a large inventory of exquisite diamonds that are sure to please. In Padis Jewelry’s enormous inventory of exquisite diamonds (we have over 10,000 loose diamonds at any one time); all of the diamonds we sell larger than 0.40 carats come with a report from an accredited, independent laboratory. Moreover our diamonds are certified by the most trusted laboratories in the country such as the U.S. divisions of AGS, Forevermark, GIA and EGL USA.
It is true that buying a comparable-sized certified diamond is a little bit more expensive than an uncertified stone but it gives you the assurance that the quality of the diamond is as described by the jeweler. The higher price is due to the cost of the certification process. To put together the report, specially trained gemologists use high-powered microscopes and other sensitive instruments to create a detailed blueprint of the stone’s quality characteristics. The report will also include information on whether the stone was treated or enhanced to improve its color or clarity. In addition to the technical measurements and evaluations of the 4Cs, you typically get a diagram of the stone’s inclusions as well as views of the top and sides of the diamond. Many certification reports also have a chart that details the weight, color grade, cuts, and angles of the stone. The certificate should stay with the diamond for life. Also keep in mind that while the report is not an appraisal, if you do plan to insure a costly diamond, your insurer may require the diamond to be certified in addition to being appraised. Please visit our website and take a look at our “Education” section to learn more about the 4Cs of diamond buying. We also have lots of tips to guide your decision. After that, we encourage you to set up an appointment to view our beautiful collection of diamonds and gemstones in person. When you are a customer of Padis Jewelry, we promise to make your visit with us as stress-free and as enjoyable as possible while you shop for a gift, engagement ring or something for yourself. We start by only offering the finest jewelry from some of the world’s top designers and an inventory of approximately 10,000 exquisite loose diamonds (any stone we sell over 0.40 carats is accompanied with an independent grading report). Padis then provides a knowledgeable non-commissioned sales staff to ensure you get the most reliably, educated information about the jewelry you are thinking of purchasing.
Another reason why it is smart to shop with Padis is we have two GIA Graduate Gemologists on staff at all times. So why is this important? The GIA (Gemological Institute of America Inc.), established in 1931, is the “world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones, and pearls.” As such, the nonprofit institute is recognized as a leading source of knowledge, standards, and education in gems and jewelry. They also established the “4Cs” of diamonds (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight) in the 1940’s. As part of the GIA Graduate Gemologists program, students receive comprehensive training on diamonds and colored stones. During the course, they are introduced to both technical and practical skills including the 4Cs, the International Diamond Grading System, and the Colored Stone Grading System. This means Padis’ GIA Graduate Gemologists have first-hand experience with the grading systems as well as the equipment and procedures used to identify and grade different types of gemstones and can offer educated information on our stones. Source: gia.edu/gem-education/program-graduate-gemologist At Padis Jewelry, we know many of our customers often confuse the term the “cut” of a diamond with the “shape.” A diamond’s shape refers to the appearance of the stone such as round, princess, emerald, asscher, marquise, oval, radiant, and cushion. The cut of a diamond refers to the proportions including depth and width and the symmetry or uniformity of the facets, which controls the diamond’s brilliance as well as its ability to reflect light through the top of the diamond.
Before a diamond is cut, the stone is evaluated to determine its best possible cut in order to maximize clarity, color, and carat weight. The most popular shape of diamonds is the round brilliant-cut as it maximizes the diamond’s ability to reflect light and brightness better than other fancy shapes. In fact, almost 75% of all diamonds sold today are round brilliant-cut. The round brilliant-cut typically cost more than comparable cushion, princess, asscher and emerald shaped diamonds as more of the stone is lost in the cutting process resulting in a fairly low yield/high demand for the stone. According to the Gemological Institute of American, the 57 or 58-facet round brilliants of today are the result of a variation of facet sizes and proportions that have evolved throughout many years. This includes “table size, crown height, length of the lower half facets, total depth, and culet size.” Round brilliant-cut diamonds with 58 facets have a culet, which is the small area at the bottom of a diamond’s pavilion or tip that is cut off and counted as one of the facets. The stone is considered a higher grade if it does not have a culet or only has a very small, or medium-sized one. A larger culet affects the appearance of the diamond and can appear as if the diamond has a hole in it. Please visit our website to see our collection of round brilliant-cut diamonds. Source: gia.edu/gia-news-research-round-brilliant-cut-diamond-pay If you want to determine the monetary value of a piece of jewelry, you will need to have an appraisal done. Appraisals are typically required if you want to insure your jewelry for replacement value. In addition appraisals are done for estate planning and tax purposes to determine fair market value of jewelry as well as to learn the value of family heirlooms. The GIA says the “value stated on the appraisal is the opinion of the appraiser based on their research and experience,” which is why you want an experienced, certified appraiser.
The experts recommend that you have your jewelry appraised every three to five years (some say every two to three years) because the value of the piece may have increased resulting in it being under insured. A safe bet is to check with your insurance company to see if they have any requirements or recommendations on updating appraisals. An updated appraisal includes reexamining the piece, a detailed description of the item, and documentation regarding its current condition. The value of the piece may change based on the current market and will be reflected in the appraisal. It should also include the appraiser’s name and their qualifications. At Padis Jewelry, our staff includes an American Gem Society (AGS) certified gemologist appraiser (CGA) who has gone through the training and certification process set forth by the AGS. In addition our appraiser is a GIA Graduate Gemologist, which is where they learned to identify and grade diamonds and colored stones.
